RICHARD M SMITH email

Liverpool, United Kingdom

rsmith2.JPG (11725 bytes)Originally hailing from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, also the birthplace of the founding member and rhythm guitarist of the Rolling Stones, the late Brian Jones, music has been part of his life since day one. Both parents having been members of a 70`s folk quartet he performed garden concerts “playing” his father’s guitar when it was nearly twice his size at the ripe old age of two.

Throughout the years he has been inspired by the works of Johnny Cash, Paul Simon, Roy Orbison and U2. Today he draws influence from, and the occasional comparison to, artists as diverse as Paul Westerberg, Nick Lowe and Warren Zevon. He even had the privilege of meeting one of his other musical heroes, Bruce Cockburn, whose parting advice to keep eyes and heart open he still lives by today.

Since a live solo debut in Memphis, TN, in 1995, performing his song `Turning Tide`, written with friend and fellow musician Nick Bradshaw, things haven’t been the same. Along the road came the summer pilgrimage to New York City...and in 1996 he moved to Liverpool where, amongst other things, he has been building a reputation as a singer and songwriter of insight and promise.

Currently he’s working on some short stories and a cycle of songs provisionally entitled `Breakfast In The Field`. There’s blood on these tracks...but don’t be fooled - In the words of the Nils Lofgren song “the sun hasn’t set on this boy yet”. Don’t worry though...the future’s safe with him. He knows the difference between imitation and innovation. When you hear the songs... you’ll know what he means.

He could be in your town soon.

"THE GREATEST ABILITY IS TO MAKE A COVER-VERSION
SOUND LIKE YOUR OWN...THE GREATEST COMPLIMENT I
CAN GIVE, IS THAT `STILL LEARNING HOW TO CRAWL`
SOUNDS LIKE A RICHARD SMITH ORIGINAL"
